DAY TO NIGHT
DAY TO NIGHT IN PHOTOSHOP
Can’t find the perfect nighttime background? No problem! Follow this tutorial to turn your daytime images into nighttime.
1 | BASE IMAGE
For this tutorial, all you need is a high quality image for the base. Everything will be done using only Photoshop.
2 | WORKFLOW:
A | ADJUST THE VERTICALS
Ctrl+A > Transform > Distort/Warp
The first step when working with a photograph is to adjust the verticals. Use some guidelines to make sure the verticals and horizontals are parallel to the picture frame.
B | LIGHTING
Ctrl+U > Cyanotype > Increase Saturation > Change layer Opacity
Turning the warm tones into cooler tones will make this image go from daytime to late afternoon with just one click!
To achieve that, duplicate the image layer, open the Hue & Saturation menu (ctrl+U), click the drop down menu and choose the option Cyanotype (adjust the saturation). Cyanotype will apply a blue tone to the entire image. After this, use the opacity layer to blend with the previous image. I have also added a gray tone layer to frame the image:
C | Night lights
At nighttime, the most convincing part are the lights! With a simple brush, choose the colors you want and click away! By choosing the layer blending mode ‘color’, the lights will look very convincing with your image.
Tip: Make sure to pay attention to the reflections.
D | ENTOURAGE
The base image is ready! Now you can add entourage and have some fun!
E | FINAL TOUCH
Clean up your image with the stamp tool to take away any distractions.
Done! With a few simple steps you can turn any daytime photographs into nighttime!
