SNOWY HALLOWEEN
WINTER HALLOWEEN RENDERING
It’s Halloween! Let’s get started with a very basic 3D model, add the landscape, textures and entourage in Photoshop to create this winter scene.
1 | BASE IMAGE
The 3D base for this image is a basic Rhino model - all textures were added in Photoshop. For the lighting, I added an emissive vray material to the ceiling and a couple of the interior walls, then rendered a version with and without lighting to be combined in Photoshop.
2 | WORKFLOW:
A | CABIN TEXTURE & LIGHTING
Just like in the previous tutorial, we’ll be combining the RGB and the Lighting base in Photoshop to create a soft lighting effect.
In Photoshop, place the RGB base, aligned, on top of the Lighting base image. Using the eraser tool, erase parts of the RGB base to reveal the Lighting base - this way you can control how much light to show inside the House without spending too much time in Vray.
The texture was also added in Photoshop. I added wood and metal to the exterior surfaces, but kept the interior very simple.
B | BACKGROUND
For the background, I combined several winter scenes to create the context.
Don’t forget that the texture in the foreground, being close to the camera, will have a bigger scale than the texture in the background. The location of the trees, as well as the various tones in the background, help frame the Architecture, as well as add depth to the context.
C | FOREGROUND
To bring some of the yellow tones from the interior lighting to the rest of the image, I added a foreground texture with a warm tone in the landscape. This will balance the colors nicely, and will also frame the main object in the scene.
D | SNOW DETAILS
Try to mimic the way the the snow would fall around the house. Using the brush tool in Photoshop, add snow details to the window frames, as well as the front steps.
For the roof, I simply used the brush tool with some opacity to reveal the roof texture.
E | LANDSCAPE
Populate the scene with landscape to add more details to the image.
In this case, I framed the house with a few trees and added ground cover landscape to frame the main entrance. Also, to bring the darker tones from the background landscape to the rest of the image, I added a snow texture with a few darker spots to the foreground.
F | ENTOURAGE
Have fun with the Entourage! Don’t forget that the entourage should add to the scene, and not distract from it. In this case, I added a little girl dressed up for halloween next to a pumpkin lantern.
Notice that the colors from the girl’s outfit matches the rest of the scene (purple and blue tones), and the pumpkin matches the tones of the interior lighting. I also added snow using a ‘snow brush’ in Photoshop (go to our Resources page to see where to download Photoshop brushes).
Last by not least, adjust levels, overall tones, Dodge & Burn, etc until the image is ready!
