BLACK AND WHITE FLOOR PLAN TUTORIAL
Floor plans can include different levels of detail, depending on the scale and information you are trying to show. For the following image, it was very important to show the scale of the overall house. This was achieved by adding furniture and accessories into each programatic space.
Layers:
1 | Linework
In this case, the base drawing was done in Rhino and exported as vector lines. The base drawing can also be done in Revit, Autocad or any other program you typically use.
Export from Rhino: File > Print > PDF
Import to Illustrator: Select PDF > Right Click > Open With > Illustrator
Line-weights: after opening the base drawing into illustrator, I divided all my layers based on their line-weights. This is the most important step to make your drawing ready clearly. I used a variation of 7 line types in this project- varying their weight, color and type.
Select vector line > Stroke > Weight / Type
To add more personality to the drawing, I also included some entourage such as plants and objects. Notice that all objects have a darker outline so they pop more in the drawing.
2 | GRAY TONE
To make the interior spaces more defined, and also make the furniture layout more clear, I added a gray tone to the floor of each room.
Photoshop: Place PDF > New Layer > Paint Bucket (G) > Contiguous and All Layers ON > Black 3% Transparency or Gray tone: C: 2 M: 1 Y: 1 K: 0 - #F7F7F7
Do not Rasterize this layer - keep it as a Vector. If you need to make any changes to the line work, you can edit it in Illustrator and Photoshop will automatically update the link.
3 | Floor Pattern
Using these textures, I applied the pattern in Photoshop. This could also be done in Illustrator.
Save as > jpeg > DONE!!
