AXONOMETRIC DRAWINGS

What are Axonometric Projections?

Axonometric projections are a very powerful way to represent your ideas and are mostly used in technical drawings. They are ortographic projections of an object, rotated around one axes to show more than one side at once. There are 3 types of axonometric projections:

So our STEP 1 is to define which angle best represents your idea. For this tutorial we’ll be using the Isometric projection.

STEP 2 is to create a base and define the color palette/overall style since this will inform the next steps. Here is where you get to add your own personality to the drawing!

For this tutorial, we’ll be using a rendered base and adding lines in illustrator to better define the objects and add more details to the image:

Outline, hatches, topography lines and landscape added in illustrator:

Rendered base exported from Rhino:

Step 3: Add line weights, shadows, entourage, hatches, topography lines and landscape! These are some characteristics that add a lot of texture to your image and help define the object’s scale. Small details matter! Try using a variety of colors, transparency and linetypes for your outlines and hatches.
